INSTITUTE ON FIELD LINGUISTICS
The first Institute on Field Linguistics and Language Documentation (InField) will be held at UC Santa Barbara from June 23 to August 1, 2008. An institute both by the field and for the field, InField aims to provide training in fieldwork and language documentation for students, professional linguists, and language activists. It will consist of a series of structured workshops on language documentation and maintenance, followed by a four-week intensive course in field methods that draws on the skills taught in the workshops. This year, three field-methods courses will be taught simultaneously: one on Kwak’wala (taught by Patricia Shaw), another on Mende (taught by Tucker Childs), and a third on a language to be determined. The deadline for applications is February 29, 2008. For information about the application, which should be submitted as an e-attachment, go here.
