VINCENT DEFENDS SECOND QUALIFYING PAPER

On December 6, Jake Vincent successfully defended his second qualifying paper. His committee was Matt Wagers (chair), Ivy Sichel, and Grant McGuire. The paper, entitled “Relative clause subextraction in English,” uses experimental methodologies to show that there appear to be some systematic exceptions to the idea that relative clauses are always strong islands in English. It shows that in both existential and predicate nominal environments, relative clauses are significantly more transparent to extraction than in transitive object environments.
