MORIMOTO TO NINJAL, TOKYO

Congratulations to Maho Morimoto, who has started her two-year position as a postdoctoral researcher at NINJAL (National Institute of Japanese Languages and Linguistics).  She will be working with Haruo Kubozono’s project team on Cross-linguistic Studies of Japanese Prosody and Grammar.

Maho writes:

“I flew into Narita the night before the Japanese government issued a mandatory 2-week observation period for those returning from the U.S., but NINJAL wanted me to self-isolate anyways. I thought that would be a good move as a precaution too. Today (April 8th) was supposed to be my first day at NINJAL after the self-quarantine period, but the government just declared a state of emergency last night. Everyone at
NINJAL is now working from home, and it seems that I will not be going in in person anytime soon. My main task for now is to work on my own research at home. Things have been weird and the threat of the virus is disturbing, but I do appreciate this transitional period which is allowing me to plan for future research.  I can only imagine the new quarter is an extra hectic one at UCSC — I hope that everyone in the department is in good health. I miss you all.”
