REMINDER: CALL FOR DIZIKES AWARD NOMINATIONS

As we mentioned in the January 9 volume of WHASC, the deadline for the Dizikes Award nominations is fast approaching. The call is repeated below:

Since 2002, the Dizikes Award has been given each year to a faculty member in the Humanities Division for their commitment and effectiveness in transformative teaching and effective mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to receiving the award, recipients have the honor of selecting an undergraduate student to receive a scholarship in their name. Past recipients include Pranav Anand in 2016, Donka Farkas in 2013, Jorge Hankamer in 2011, and Jaye Padgett in 2006. Current students and recent alumni are now invited to nominate faculty for the 2016 award. According to the call, “Nominations should address the faculty member’s ability to arouse curiosity in students, to encourage high standards, and to stimulate students to original and rigorous work though guidance and mentoring. Other criteria include creating an inclusive learning environment that is open and encouraging to all students, relating the subject to other fields of knowledge and making the learning relevant to experience outside the academy.” Nominations must include a single-page form, available here, along with a one-page narrative. Nominations should be submitted to the the Linguistics Undergraduate Coordinator Matthew MacLeod by February 6th, 2017. If you are considering a nomination, you are encouraged to consult with Matthew for guidance.

CALL FOR PAPERS: PLM2017

The 47th Poznan Linguistic Meeting (PLM2017) will take place on 18-20 September 2017 in Poznan, Poland. The Meeting will be organized by the Faculty of English of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. The leitmotif of the 47th PLM will be “Language in focus: The big picture”. We would like to see examples of how one can look for holistic, bird’s-eye generalizations about language rather than low-level detail. This will mean examining the contributions of the individual subdisciplines of linguistics to the “big picture”, including interactions between them. However, we will also welcome perspectives from neighbouring fields, in particular psychology, sociology, biology, medicine, cognitive science, and computer science. Submission deadline for the thematic session proposals: 27 January 2017. Submission deadline for ALL abstracts (general sessions and thematic sessions): 24 March 2017.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: SULC

The 4th annual Scarborough Undergraduate Linguistics Conference (SULC) will be taking place on Friday, March 3rd, 2017 at the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus. Students are invited to submit abstracts, due on January 27th. Details are available here.

READ OUR LIPS

Language Identity and Perception (LIP) Reading Group is a Phonetics reading and discussion group, primarily focusing on issues surrounding speech perception and talker identity in various populations, languages and varieties. We gather almost (but not quite) every week to discuss an experimental paper that no one in the group has read before. LIP is an interdepartmental group, including faculty and students from the Linguistics Department and the Languages and Applied Linguistics Department at UCSC.

This quarter, we will be meeting on Fridays at 11am. Our first meeting of the quarter is scheduled on January 27th. If you are interested in joining the group mailing list, please contact Maho Morimoto: mamorimo@ucsc.edu. Meeting schedule and locations will also be updated on the LIP website.

DEPARTMENT RECEIVES UCEAP GRANT

Congratulations to Grant McGuire (Linguistics Undergraduate Director) and Matthew MacLeod (Linguistics Undergraduate Advising Coordinator), who received a grant from UCEAP for Academic Integration of Study Abroad. The $5,000 in funding from the UCEAP Grants for Academic Integration of Study Abroad will help with the academic integration of the UCEAP programs and coursework into our department, which will enable more students to make study abroad an integral part of their academic journey.
