UNDERGRADUATES: FUNDS TO SUPPORT RESEARCH

The Linguistics Department has a limited amount of research funds to support outstanding research projects by undergraduates. Funding covers expenses of doing research as well as travel to conferences to present research. Funding may be capped at $300 per person, though applicants can present a larger request. Applicants should submit a 1-page proposal plus a budget to Undergraduate Coordinator Susan Welch by April 30, 2012.

WORKSHOP ON LOCALITY AND DIRECTIONALITY AT THE MORPHOSYNTAX-PHONOLOGY INTERFACE

Stephanie Shih and Vera Gribanova (UCSC PhD 2010) would like to announce the Workshop on Locality and Directionality at the Morphosyntax-Phonology Interface, which will take place at Stanford University on October 12-14, 2012. The workshop’s agenda grows directly out of the collaborative research undertaken by UCSC and Stanford linguists in the research cluster, Crosslinguistic Investigations in Syntax-Phonology (CrISP).

This workshop aims to address the interconnectedness of phonology and syntax by pursuing two lines of inquiry: (1) locality and cyclicity in morphophonology, and (2) the impact of phonology on syntactic operations. The first line of inquiry explores how far morphosyntax reaches into phonology: how are the domains for morphophonological processes (e.g., allomorph selection) determined? Are they derived from morphosyntactic domains, and, if so, how rigidly do these domains determine what happens in phonology? The second line of inquiry questions the strong claim that phonology is purely interpretive, exploring the possibility that phonological information plays a crucial role in influencing certain morphosyntactic processes, and trying to establish the degree and nature of that influence.

We invite paper and poster submissions addressing the two topics of the workshop. More information can be found on our call for papers and the workshop website.

2012 CALIFORNIA COGNITIVE SCIENCE CONFERENCE

The annual California Cognitive Science Conference, hosted by the Cognitive Science Student Association at UC Berkeley, brings together hundreds of students, researchers, and members of the general public who share a passion for Cognitive Science. This year’s theme is “Consciousness: Nature of Mind”. The conference takes place Saturday, April 28, 9 am – 5:30 pm. Keynote speakers are Christof Koch and John Searle.

Undergraduates who present their research at our poster session can attend all conference events for FREE. Abstracts are due April 7th. Learn more about the conference here, and feel free to contact the Cognitive Science Student Association via email at calcogscicon@gmail.com with any questions.

Undergraduates: Call For Papers For Cornell Conference

UnderLings, the Cornell University undergraduate linguistics association, requests abstract submissions for the 6th annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium. The Colloquium will take place April 21-22, 2012. Student submissions at all levels are encouraged in a variety of subfields of linguistics, including but not limited to phonetics, phonology, syntax, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition. Applicants pursuing a B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree are invited to submit a one-page abstract for a talk of no more than twenty minutes in length or for a poster presentation at our poster session.

Abstracts should be submitted to culc2012@gmail.com by March 21st. Please indicate whether you would like to be considered for a talk or for the poster session or both. There is a probability that the conference proceedings will be published afterward, most likely in an online, widely-accessible format. Information about the Colloquium may be found here.

Linguistics at Santa Cruz (LASC) Conference This Saturday

The department’s annual Linguistics at Santa Cruz (LASC) conference will take place this Saturday, March 10th, 8:15-4:30, in Humanities One, room 202. The program for the conference is available here. Our guest alum speaker this year is Chris Barker of New York University.
