KUSSIN-GIKA RECEIVES DEANS’ UNDERGRAD AWARD

Congratulations to current linguistics major (and history double major) Ian Kussin-Gika, whose project “Kinderlach and Communists: or A Comparison between Soviet Ethnic Policy and Labour Zionism Through the Lens of the Infamous JAO” has been selected to receive a 2017-18 Deans’ Undergraduate award. The award will be recognized at the Annual Humanities Spring Awards Celebration. The announcement of the award states that “the projects submitted this year were outstanding and reflect the high caliber of work of the students who undertook research projects.”

ZYMAN AT CHICAGO

Last Tuesday, graduate student Erik Zyman gave a talk at the University of Chicago on “The Rich Syntax of Grammatical Relations: Raising and Hyperraising in P’urhepecha.” He reports that he received a warm welcome and a great many helpful questions and suggestions, and that he had productive and enjoyable meetings with various faculty members and graduate students while there.

SLUGS AT WSCLA

On April 13-15, Maziar Toosarvandani and Jérémie Beauchamp traveled to Ottawa on the occasion of the 23rd Workshop on Structure and Constituency in Languages of the Americas (WSCLA). As one of the keynote speakers, Maziar presented his work with Steven Foley on constraints on clitic combinations in Santiago Laxopa Zapotec. As for Jérémie, he presented on vowel epenthesis in Kĩsêdjê. Despite a threatening weather forecast and freezing rain on the last day, the crowd of fieldworkers created a warm atmosphere, engaging in interesting discussions about several aspects of a variety of South, North and Meso-American languages.

RUDIN ACCEPTS POSITION AT USC

We are pleased to report that fifth year Deniz Rudin has been offered and has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor of linguistics (semantics) position at USC, to commence in August 2018. We wish you best of luck in your future endeavors. Congratulations, Deniz!

ZYMAN DISSERTATION DEFENDED

Our congratulations to Erik Zyman who defended his dissertation on March 15th. Erik’s dissertation is titled “On the Driving Force for Syntactic Movement.” Those who were present followed him to a celebratory after-party. Congratulations Dr. Zyman!

PIZARRO-GUEVARA ADVANCES TO CANDIDACY

Congratulations to Jed Pizarro-Guevara who successfully defended his QE on March 21. The project is entitled “The predictive value of Tagalog voice in sentence processing: Evidence from a series of Stops-Making-Sense studies.” His committee included Matt Wagers (chair), Sandy Chung, Amanda Rysling, and Joey Sabbagh (UT Arlington). Congratulations Jed!
