WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SANTA CRUZ

Another distinguished alumna, Line Mikkelsen of UC Berkeley will be returning to the department on Friday October 17th to give a presentation in S-Circle (Syntax and Semantics Circle). Line’s talk, entitled “What goes postverbal in a verb-final language? On the interplay of prosody, information structure, and word order in Karuk” will take place in the Linguistics Common Room at 4:00pm. Other events planned for S-Circle this quarter are listed here.
Jane Grimshaw of Rutgers University will be the first speaker in this year’s colloquium series. The talk will take place at 4pm on Friday, October 17th and it will be in the Stevenson Fireside Lounge. Jane’s title is The use of force in clausal complementation and the abstract is available here.
We’ll open the new academic year with a workshop on Information Structure and Syntax on Saturday October 4th. The workshop will feature presentations by current UCSC people (Bern Samko and Jim McCloskey), by alumna Vera Gribanova and by LRC Associate Karen Lahousse from the Department of Linguistics at KU Leuven in Belgium. The workshop will take place in Room 210 of Humanities One, beginning at 10:00am. The program is available here. All are of course welcome.
On Wednesday May 28th from 4.00 until 5.30pm, Maziar Toosarvandani will will give the 28th Stevenson Distinguished Faculty Lecture, in the Stevenson Fireside Lounge. His title is Talking About Time in a Language Without Tense. A poster for the event is available here.
Mark Aronoff of the Linguistics Department at Stony Brook University will present in Morphology Reading Group on Friday, May 30th at 1.00pm in the Cave. Mark’s talk will be on Synonymy and Competition in Language.
S-Circle will have its final meeting of the year at 3:30 on Friday June 6th (D-Day and also Sweden’s National Day), when LRC visitor Filippa Lindahl from the University of Göteborg in Sweden will present her ongoing work on island-violating movement in Swedish.
Among the other events of the week, Clare Sandy, of Berkeley will be presenting in Morphology Reading Group next Friday, May 23rd at 1:00 in the Linguistics Common Room. Clare’s talk will be on “Bracketing Paradoxes in Karuk Compounding”.
